Delhi Begins ‘Atal Canteen’ Rollout, Sets Dec. 25 Launch for 100 Rs 5 Meal Sites

The programme positions subsidised meals as a nutrition-focused safety net under FSSAI oversight.

  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta laid the foundation stone at Sanjay Basti in Timarpur, with MP Manoj Tiwari, Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood and MLA Surya Prakash Khatri in attendance.
  • Each site will serve freshly prepared lunch and dinner for Rs 5 with digital token systems, real-time CCTV, RO drinking water, stainless-steel seating and safe waste management.
  • Food safety will be monitored by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India with mandatory staff health certification and hygiene compliance.
  • The government announced Rs 100 crore for setting up 100 canteens and a separate Rs 700 crore provision for slum-area upgrades including roads, toilets and health facilities.
  • Officials said the initiative fulfils a manifesto pledge, ties the opening to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary and aims to create local jobs for women’s self-help groups, local women and gig workers.
