Delhi Assembly Renames Disputed Chamber as ‘Tiffin Kaksh’ and Launches Inquiry

Archival maps have shown the chamber was a service area rather than an execution site, prompting a Privileges Committee inquiry.

Overview

  • The Assembly officially renamed the so-called “Phansi Ghar” as “Tiffin Kaksh” on August 8 and ordered removal of the 2022 foundation plaque crediting AAP leaders.
  • Work is under way to restore the chamber to its documented 1912 layout and to prominently display the original architectural map from the National Archives of India.
  • Speaker Vijender Gupta cited research from the National Archives, ICHR, IGNCA, Delhi University and other experts confirming the room served as a tiffin room or lift shaft, not a gallows.
  • The Privileges Committee has been authorized to summon Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Ram Niwas Goel and Rakhi Birla to testify on their involvement in the 2022 renovation.
  • AAP legislators have demanded an independent Archaeological Survey of India investigation and accused the inquiry of being politically driven.
