Delhi Approves Water Bill Relief: Full Late Fee Waiver Till January, Interest Cut to 2%

The move targets inflated arrears from years of heavy compounding to stabilise the Delhi Jal Board’s finances.

Overview

  • Starting next month through March 31, 2026, Delhi will waive late payment surcharges on domestic and government water bills, with commercial users excluded pending a separate decision.
  • Consumers who clear dues by January 31 will receive a 100% waiver, with a 70% waiver available during a February–March extension, covering bills pending through September 2025.
  • The DJB permanently reduced the compounding interest on overdue bills to 2% per billing cycle from 5%, and bills due from October will carry the lower surcharge.
  • Total outstanding dues stand at Rs 87,589 crore, including Rs 80,463 crore in surcharges; domestic arrears are Rs 16,068 crore with Rs 11,069 crore as LPSC.
  • Fees to legalise illegal connections drop to Rs 1,000 for households and Rs 5,000 for non-domestic users through March 31, 2026, alongside facilitation camps, expanded licensed meter installers, and linked sewage and Yamuna-cleanup projects.
