Overview

  • The Delhi government has greenlit a 5 km tunnel from Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur (Dwarka Expressway) to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj at a cost of Rs 3,500 crore.
  • It forms part of a broader Rs 24,000 crore infrastructure package approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways after a meeting between CM Rekha Gupta and Minister Nitin Gadkari.
  • The tunnel will feature two underground tubes with three lanes each and include electro-mechanical systems, ventilation, fire safety measures, CCTV surveillance, control rooms, emergency exits, and cross-passages.
  • Planners expect it to relieve congestion on NH-48, Nelson Mandela Road, Mahipalpur, Rangpuri, Dhaula Kuan, and Rao Tula Ram Marg.
  • All technical and formal clearances are in their final stages and construction is slated to commence early next year.
