Delhi Airport to Shut Third Runway Feb. 16–Early July for Major Overhaul

DIAL says scheduled movements will remain at 1,514 per day during the closure.

Overview

  • The rehabilitation of Runway 11R/29L will include resurfacing, dense bituminous layers, new pavement markings, removal and reinstallation of about 2,000 airfield lighting fixtures, basic strip works across roughly 500,000 sqm, and rigid pavement upgrades spanning 39,000 metres.
  • A new Rapid Exit Taxiway designated Z1 will connect the runway to the Zulu taxiway to enable faster turnoffs and reduce runway occupancy time during peak periods.
  • The project adds a new Instrument Landing System that will require calibration, validation, and entry into service in line with the AIRAC cycle before operational use.
  • Recommissioning is targeted for early July subject to Directorate General of Civil Aviation approval and successful navigation-system validation.
  • DIAL cites rising traffic, operational intensity, and ageing infrastructure as the drivers for the upgrade and says it has coordinated plans with AAI, DGCA, airlines, and ATC to limit disruption.
