Delhi Airport Plans Four-Month Shutdown of Runway 11R/29L for Upgrades

Officials cite tighter coordination with regulators to limit disruption.

Overview

  • Runway 11R/29L is expected to close from mid-February to late June for works pending final clearances, with Feb 16 cited as a provisional start date.
  • Planned upgrades include replacement of ILS at both ends, full resurfacing, a new rapid exit taxiway, and drainage and RESA improvements.
  • Operational reconfiguration is planned with runway 29R in mixed mode, runway 28 for departures only, and runway 27 for arrivals only.
  • Officials estimate roughly 1,515 daily aircraft movements during the closure, compared with about 1,550 when all four runways operate.
  • The ministry, DGCA, AAI, DIAL and airlines have been meeting since December, with airlines advised to account for easterly wind constraints and monthly performance reviews set during the works.
