Delhi Air Quality Slides Back to 'Very Poor' as Stubble Smoke Surges

Forecasts point to crop-residue fires becoming the dominant PM2.5 source through the weekend.

Overview

  • Delhi’s 24-hour average AQI reached about 311, with most monitoring stations reporting very poor air quality, according to CPCB data.
  • The DSS estimated stubble burning contributed 21.5% to PM2.5 on Thursday and projected 36.9% on Friday and 32.4% on Saturday, with transport the next-largest source at about 16.2% on Thursday.
  • Satellite and state data showed farm-fire activity spiking, including 351 incidents in Punjab on Thursday, alongside detections in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Short-term readings from private and international platforms showed far higher, hazardous levels, with AQI values reported above 700 in early readings, underscoring large disparities across monitoring systems.
  • Calm northwesterly winds and a temperature drop that produced inversions are expected to keep dispersion poor through Nov 6–8, as Delhi deploys intensified cleaning and enforcement and experts advise limiting exposure and using N95 masks or indoor purifiers.
