Delhi Air Quality Hits ‘Severe’ at Many Stations After Overnight Smog Surge

Stagnant winds with fog trapped pollutants, driving a sharp spike after Friday’s brief respite.

Overview

  • Delhi’s average AQI jumped from 233 on Friday to 377 at 7 am Sunday and touched 396 by 9 am, Central Pollution Control Board data showed.
  • Multiple neighbourhoods breached the 400 ‘severe’ mark, including Wazirpur at 432 and RK Puram at 425, with at least 18 of 39 stations in the worst category at points in the morning.
  • Meteorologists reported calm to light winds, high humidity and shallow fog that suppressed dispersion, with visibility around 900–1,300 metres at Safdarjung and Palam.
  • The Centre’s Decision Support System estimated stubble-burning contribution rising to about 9% on Saturday as winds shifted toward northwestern source regions.
  • GRAP Stage II remains in effect with doubled NDMC parking fees and CAQM curbs on entry of non‑compliant commercial goods vehicles from November 1, while cloud‑seeding trials are on hold pending sufficient moisture and forecasts warn of very poor air for several days.
