Delhi Accelerates Urban Greening With Mature Tree Planting and Bamboo Screens

A new plant protection cell at Lodhi Garden leverages geo-tagging to secure recently planted mature saplings along key thoroughfares ahead of neighbourhood drives.

Overview

  • NDMC has planted over 12,000 mature flowering trees and shrubs, including Queen’s Crepe Myrtle, Rosy Trumpet Tree and Bougainvillea, along Sardar Patel Marg as part of its Gap Filling campaign.
  • The 2025 civic greening plan sets targets to add 3,000 trees, 3.5 million shrubs and nearly 4,000 bamboo plants across Delhi, with natural bamboo screens installed at four major roads.
  • The Municipal Corporation of Delhi aims to plant over 700,000 saplings this year, comprising 300,000 trees, 400,000 shrubs and around 3,300 bamboo plants, and has already planted more than 66,000.
  • NDMC will install 4,000 biodegradable hanging flower baskets and launch rooftop gardening initiatives to involve residents in expanding the capital’s green cover.
  • Further greening drives are planned in Janakpuri next week to extend the citywide urban forestry efforts.
