Deforestation in Brazil’s Federal Protected Areas Hits 17-Year Low in the Amazon

ICMBio credits a reinforced on-the-ground presence for the decline captured by Prodes.

Overview

  • Inpe’s latest Prodes cycle records 134 km² cleared in federal conservation units in the Amazon and 31 km² in the Cerrado for August 2024 to July 2025.
  • The results mark the lowest rate in Amazon protected areas since 2008 and the second-lowest in Cerrado units since 2007.
  • Compared with the previous year, deforestation in these federal units fell 31% in the Amazon and 45% in the Cerrado.
  • Across the biomes overall, deforestation declined 11.08% in the Amazon Legal and 11.49% in the Cerrado, with the Amazon posting its third-lowest rate since 1988.
  • ICMBio reports 312 enforcement actions in the Amazon and 91 in the Cerrado during the period and says the renewed presence supports Brazil’s push toward zero deforestation by 2030.
