Critics say his move undermines church-state separation at the Pentagon by promoting a pastor who calls for a Christian theocracy

Overview

  • On August 8, Hegseth used a Defense Department–affiliated X account to repost a CNN segment featuring Doug Wilson calling for the repeal of the 19th Amendment and the criminalization of homosexuality.
  • The CNN report shows Wilson and other Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches pastors advocating that women submit to their husbands, reverse women’s suffrage and replace secular democracy with a government ruled by Christ.
  • Hegseth and his family attended the July inaugural service of Christ Church Washington D.C., a CREC affiliate, and he has hosted monthly Christian prayer meetings inside the Pentagon led by his personal pastor, Brooks Potteiger.
  • Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed Hegseth is a proud member of the CREC network and said the defense secretary “very much appreciates” Wilson’s writings and teachings.
  • Advocates for religious neutrality warn the endorsement blurs the line between personal faith and official duties at the Pentagon and elevates fringe Christian nationalist ideology within military leadership.
