Overview

  • On July 17 jurors watched graphic body-worn camera footage showing Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso chasing Steven Montano before being shot and falling backward.
  • Prosecutors presented evidence that Montano allegedly turned, drew a handgun and fired five shots at point-blank range during the March 2023 foot pursuit in Gage Park.
  • The defense maintains Montano acted out of panic when he was cornered by police and plans to have him take the stand later this week.
  • Officer Miguel Enciso and multiple civilian witnesses described hearing the gunfire, seeing a Taser deployed and recovering Montano’s pistol with a live round still chambered.
  • Closing arguments are expected later this week once the defense concludes its case and the court moves toward jury deliberations.
