Defense Confirms Assaults on Carla Zambelli in Italian Prison as She Awaits Extradition Decision

Her mandate was already revoked by Brazil's Supreme Court following a final conviction for invading CNJ systems to insert false documents.

Overview

  • Senator Magno Malta reported at least two attacks by fellow inmates in Rome’s Rebibbia prison, and Zambelli’s lawyer confirmed the incidents while saying no formal report was made to Italian authorities.
  • Her defense attributed the conflicts to frequent changes of cellmates and said she was subsequently transferred to a different cell and floor.
  • Zambelli has been detained in Rome since July after leaving Brazil, and she awaits an Italian judicial ruling on Brazil’s extradition request, which the public prosecutor has recommended granting.
  • On December 12, the Supreme Federal Court’s First Panel unanimously annulled the Chamber’s rejection and ordered the immediate loss of her seat under Article 55.
  • Separately, São Paulo’s regional electoral court annulled her 2022 election on January 30 and imposed eight years of ineligibility from 2022, and in the Chamber’s December 11 vote, 227 deputies supported punishment, short of the 257 required.
