Defence Ministry Team Reaches Summits of Mt Merag-III and Mt Kangju Kangri

The Ministry of Defence has praised the accomplishment as a testament to India’s growing prowess in extreme-altitude operations.

Overview

  • Instructors from Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute joined forces for the expedition.
  • Led by Colonel Hem Chandra Singh, the team departed from Sonamarg on July 24 with personnel from all three institutes.
  • On August 4 the climbers reached the 6,480 meter summit of Mt Merag-III and the 6,710 meter summit of Mt Kangju Kangri in the Pangong Tso region.
  • The Defence Ministry commended the team for displaying exceptional courage, resilience and coordination under severe weather and high-altitude conditions.
  • The operation is part of a broader MoD strategy to integrate adventure sports with leadership training and patriotic outreach along strategic mountain borders.
