Defence Ministry Hails Indigenous ATAGS as Mission-Mode Success

Field tests of an 8×8 Mounted Gun System variant have begun to complement a five-year delivery schedule for 307 towed artillery systems.

Overview

  • Developed by DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment in Pune, ATAGS boasts a 48 km firing range and an all-electric drive for maintenance-free operation in mountain and desert terrains
  • The system underwent 12 years of development from its 2012 launch through design, manufacturing and testing before entering initial induction in 2024
  • On March 26, contracts worth ₹6,900 crore were signed with Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems for 307 155 mm/52 calibre ATAGS and high-mobility 6×6 towing vehicles
  • Deliveries of the towed guns and vehicles are scheduled over the next five years to replace vintage and smaller-calibre artillery regiments
  • Army trials are under way for an ATAGS-derived armoured Mounted Gun System on an 8×8 chassis with up to 85% indigenous content ahead of its projected 2027 induction
