DeezerIpsos Test Finds 97% of Listeners Can’t Tell AI Music From Human

Platforms report a surge in AI uploads alongside new labeling, detection measures, royalty safeguards.

Overview

  • A blind test of 9,000 people across eight countries found that 97% failed to identify the human-made track when presented with two AI songs and one human song.
  • More than half of respondents said they felt uncomfortable with their inability to tell the difference, and 80% called for clear labeling of fully AI-generated music.
  • Deezer says over 50,000 entirely AI-generated songs are uploaded to its service each day, representing about one-third of new submissions.
  • Deezer tags AI music, uses detection tools to remove fully AI-generated tracks from algorithmic recommendations, and excludes fake streams from royalty payments; the company says up to 70% of AI uploads appear fraudulent.
  • An AI-produced country track, “Walk My Walk” by Breaking Rust, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s digital sales chart for country songs, while rights holders pursue licensing deals such as UMG’s settlement and planned platform with Udio.
