Overview

  • On June 30, Deerhoof announced plans to remove their music from Spotify in protest of Daniel Ek’s €600 million backing of defense AI company Helsing through his firm Prima Materia.
  • The band labeled Spotify a “widely hated data-mining scam” and said platform payouts are negligible compared to their touring income.
  • Joyful Noise Recordings is facilitating the process and absorbing associated revenue losses on behalf of the band.
  • Deerhoof did not specify when their catalog will vanish from Spotify but said removal will occur as soon as possible.
  • The move places Deerhoof alongside Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, who previously withdrew their music from Spotify over ethical or audio-quality concerns.
