Overview
- The IMD says the weather system over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal has concentrated near the north Tamil Nadu–Puducherry–south Andhra coast and is likely to intensify further within 24 hours.
- Red alerts have been issued for eight districts, including Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram, with orange alerts for ten districts including Chennai.
- Heavy to very heavy rain is forecast over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, with isolated extremely heavy rain likely in Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai and in Puducherry.
- Schools are shut in Chennai, while several districts such as Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and Tiruvallur have closed schools and in some cases colleges as a precaution.
- The RMC Chennai has advised fishermen to avoid the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and South Andaman Sea from October 23 to 26 due to squally winds of 45–55 km/h with gusts up to 65 km/h.
