  • The deep partial eclipse runs the night of Aug. 27–28 and reaches maximum at about 12:12–12:13 a.m. EDT (04:12–04:13 UTC), when roughly 96% of the Moon sits inside Earth’s darkest shadow.
  • Observers across much of North and South America and parts of western Europe and western Africa can see some or all of the event, with Alaska and Hawaii having different horizon-timing limits.
  • The full sequence lasts over five hours with the umbral (partial) phase spanning about three hours and 18 minutes, so viewers can watch the Moon slowly darken rather than missing a single brief moment.
  • The eclipsed portion may glow coppery to deep red because sunlight refracted through Earth’s atmosphere filters out blue light, and local aerosols, smoke or clouds will change the hue and brightness.
  • Many observatories and projects are streaming the eclipse live for those clouded out or outside the visibility zone, and the event is safe to watch with the naked eye without special filters.
