Deep Partial Lunar Eclipse Set for Friday, Aug. 28, 2026

About 93–94 percent of the Moon will pass into Earth’s umbra, giving western observers the best chance to see the peak before moonset or sunrise.

  • The visible umbral phase begins at roughly 04:33–04:34 CET and the eclipse reaches its maximum around 06:12–06:13 CET on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026.
  • This is a very deep partial eclipse with about 93–94 percent of the lunar disk inside Earth’s core shadow, so the Moon will darken dramatically but will not become fully total.
  • Observers far to the west in Europe and locations across Africa and the Americas can see more of the event because the Moon sets later there, while eastern German sites risk missing the peak to moonset or morning twilight.
  • No special eye protection is required to watch the eclipse, but viewers should seek a clear west or southwest horizon, consider binoculars or a small telescope, plan to be in place by about 04:30–05:30 CET, and check local weather forecasts or livestreams if skies are cloudy.
  • The event follows the Aug. 12 solar eclipse as part of the same eclipse season and the next total lunar eclipse visible from Germany will occur on Dec. 31, 2028.
