Deep Depression to Weaken as It Crosses North Sri Lanka Today, IMD Puts Tamil Nadu Delta on Orange Alert

IMD expects a weaker crossing over north Sri Lanka that limits Chennai to lighter rains.

Overview

  • IMD says the Bay of Bengal deep depression is moving northwest and is likely to cross between Trincomalee and Jaffna around noon or afternoon on January 10 as a weakening depression.
  • Orange alerts are in place for Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore, Puducherry and Karaikal for isolated very heavy rain of 12–20 cm.
  • Chennai and surrounding districts are under a yellow alert with forecasts of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, and recent heavy-rain alerts for the city have been downgraded.
  • Squally winds of 40–50 km/h gusting to 60 km/h, rough to very rough seas and 2.7–3.1 m waves are expected along the Tamil NaduPuducherry coast, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin, with fishermen advised to stay ashore.
  • Meteorologists note January Bay of Bengal systems are uncommon, and forecasts indicate winds and rainfall will ease from January 11–13 as the system weakens further.
