Overview
- The India Meteorological Department said the Bay of Bengal system has intensified into a deep depression and is very likely to cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur during Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday.
- Red and orange warnings are active for multiple districts in southern Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh and authorities have closed schools, cancelled staff leave and opened shelters in preparation.
- Odisha has moved at least 3,500 people to cyclone centres in Gajapati and deployed 33 ODRAF teams while Andhra Pradesh disaster officials issued flash flood alerts and cautioned residents in low‑lying and hilly areas to be ready to relocate.
- The IMD warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls, squalls with gusts up to about 75 km/h and very rough seas, and it has advised fishermen to stay ashore until conditions improve.
- A deep depression is stronger than a low‑pressure area but below cyclonic storm strength, and officials say the wet, already saturated ground raises the risk of flash floods, landslides and infrastructure damage if rainfall intensifies or the system strengthens further.
