Dedham Parish Weighs Fate of 'ICE Was Here' Nativity After Archdiocese Rebuke

A parish council decision is due after the Archdiocese of Boston called the display improper.

Overview

  • St. Susanna Parish in Dedham replaced the Holy Family in its outdoor nativity with a sign reading “ICE WAS HERE” and a smaller notice directing people to call the LUCE hotline.
  • Pastor Rev. Stephen Josoma says the installation reflects solidarity with migrants after conversations with refugee families the parish has assisted.
  • The Archdiocese of Boston demanded the display be removed, citing church norms against using sacred objects for political messaging and noting the parish did not seek permission.
  • ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons condemned the pastor’s action and a DHS spokesperson said the scene depicts something that does not occur, asserting that ICE does not separate families.
  • Parish leaders plan to announce their decision later Monday as visitors arrive to view the scene and parishioners voice divided views on keeping or removing the protest display.
