Overview

  • The International Organization for Migration has revised the fatalities to between 68 and 76 with as many as 132 people still missing following the vessel’s capsizing off Abyan governorate on August 3–4.
  • Rescue teams have recovered dozens of bodies washed ashore in Khanfar and Zinjibar districts despite rough Arabian Sea conditions slowing operations.
  • Twelve survivors were pulled from the water and transferred to Shaqra Hospital, where some remain in critical condition after prolonged exposure.
  • The smuggler-operated boat, overloaded with about 154 mainly Ethiopian migrants, overturned late Saturday night under powerful winds.
  • UN and Yemeni officials warned that Yemen’s Eastern Route remains one of the world’s most dangerous migration corridors and urged expansion of legal pathways to curb fatalities.
