Death Toll Climbs to 18 in Explosion at Chinese-Owned Indonesian Nickel Plant

The death toll from the explosion at a Chinese-owned nickel plant in Indonesia has risen to 18, with eight of the deceased being Chinese workers.
The explosion occurred on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at the PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel smelting plant, part of China's Belt and Road Initiative.
The plant has been ordered to cease operations until an investigation into the incident is completed.
This is the third fatal incident this year at Chinese-owned nickel smelting plants in Central Sulawesi province, which has the largest nickel reserves in Indonesia.
Nearly 50% of the shares of PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park, the parent company of the plant where the explosion occurred, are owned by a Chinese holding company.
