Overview

  • Dahlmeier was struck by a rockfall at about 5,700 meters on Laila Peak on July 28, sustaining fatal injuries.
  • An aerial search on July 29 detected no vital signs; authorities officially confirmed her death the following day.
  • Adverse weather and ongoing rockfall made ground access impossible and led to the suspension of recovery efforts.
  • Dahlmeier had explicitly stated in writing that no one should risk their lives to recover her body, a wish her family also supports.
  • The 31-year-old retired biathlon star won two Olympic gold medals in PyeongChang 2018 before turning to high-altitude mountaineering, most recently setting a speed record on Nepal’s Ama Dablam.
