Overview

• Malik Joshua Campbell was discovered unresponsive Tuesday afternoon at the California Correctional Institution and was pronounced dead in the prison’s triage area about 30 minutes later.
• CDCR said the Kern County Coroner will review the case as part of an active homicide investigation, and no weapon was recovered at the scene.
• Campbell’s cellmate, identified as 29-year-old Donte Walker, was moved to restricted housing pending the outcome of the investigation.
• Campbell was sentenced last year to 24 years for his role in the June 23, 2019 La Jolla drive-by that killed 20-year-old Nina Silver and wounded three others, which prosecutors described as gang-motivated with Silver not the intended target.
• Co-defendant Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, identified by prosecutors as the shooter, received a 35-year sentence, and officials said Campbell had been in state prison since October 2024.
