‘Dear New York’ Takes Over Grand Central, Replacing Ads With Humans of New York Portraits

Stanton pairs the installation with a companion book that will donate all royalties to local charities.

Overview

  • The temporary takeover runs October 6–19 at Grand Central Terminal and in parts of the connected subway station.
  • More than 150 digital screens now show portraits alongside 50‑foot story projections, with subway walls turned into gallery space and live performances presented in collaboration with The Juilliard School.
  • For the duration of the installation, every advertisement in Grand Central has been cleared to make room for the displays.
  • Stanton describes the work as a visual love letter intended to give roughly 750,000 daily passersby brief moments of reflection.
  • A 500‑page companion book titled “Dear New York” goes on sale October 7, with the creator pledging all royalties to New York City charities.
