Deadly Storm Ciarán Sweeps Across Europe with Record Rainfall, European Death Toll Rises to 14

Unprecedented rainfall traps residents in Tuscany, Italy, disrupts transportation, causes floods and property damage while Albania and southern regions of Italy fear next impact from power-packed Storm Ciarán.

  • Storm Ciarán has caused unprecedented and record-breaking rainfall across Europe, resulting in major floods in Italy's Tuscany region. In a span of three hours, nearly 8 inches of rain fell, causing rivers to overflow and trapping residents in their homes.
  • In Tuscany alone, at least five people were killed including an 85-year-old man and an 84-year old woman who were found in floodwater in their homes. Among the victims were also a couple who had been missing near the town of Vinci, and another person in Livorno province.
  • As the storm progressed, it caused severe disruption to transportation, with train lines and highways disrupted throughout Tuscany, leaving hundreds of people stranded and unable to get home. At least four hospitals were also flooded, causing significant impact to healthcare services in the region.
  • Storm Ciarán's impact has been felt across several regions, including Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, where it claimed seven lives and caused widespread destruction, including power outages and travel chaos.
  • The storm not only disrupted life in mainland Europe, but also caused damage and power outages in the UK, leaving more than half a million French households without electricity for a second day, halting trains in several areas and keeping many roads closed.
