Deadly Rains Unleash Huaicos in Peru as 15 Regions Enter Red Alert

Rescue operations face equipment shortages under a nationwide high-risk warning.

Overview

  • In Perené (Chanchamayo), a huaico buried a truck and a rustic home, with at least four people reported dead and others still missing, including victims identified as Thalía Pariona Enciso and Ronald Jara Surichaqui.
  • A separate huaico at km 47 of the Central Highway in El Mirador, Chinchao (Huánuco) completely blocked the HuánucoTingo María route, stranding buses and cargo trucks as users called for immediate heavy machinery from Provías.
  • Senamhi placed 15 regions under a red alert for intense rains, lightning and strong winds, warning of heightened risks of landslides, activation of quebradas and flooding in vulnerable areas.
  • COEN and Indeci reported search-and-rescue deployments and ongoing Damage and Needs Assessments, while unstable terrain and the lack of heavy equipment slowed recoveries and road clearance.
  • In Pasco’s Oxapampa province, major slides cut off Pozuzo and Huancabamba with no safe passage reported, and in La Libertad two miners trapped by a slide in Sayapullo were rescued alive after coordinated local efforts.
