Deadly Louis Vuitton Crash-and-Grab, Loop Robbery Shooting Mark Turbulent 48 Hours in Chicago

Investigators are evaluating possible links to recent downtown retail crews.

Overview

  • Before dawn Thursday, a pickup truck was used to ram the Louis Vuitton store at 919 N. Michigan Ave., with multiple vehicles involved in the attempted burglary.
  • A fleeing car ran a red light on Michigan Avenue and struck an uninvolved vehicle, killing its driver, and other getaway crashes were reported near Roosevelt Road and DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • Chicago Fire Department officials said five people were in critical condition, and police reported several suspected crew members hospitalized and others detained as the probe continues.
  • Late Wednesday morning in the Loop, a Brink’s guard shot a person who tried to rob him outside the 0–100 block of South State Street; the wounded suspect fled to the Washington Blue Line stop, was taken into custody, and was listed in stable condition with charges pending.
  • Separately on Tuesday, three men ages 31, 44 and 52 were fatally shot in unrelated South Side attacks, and no arrests were reported.
