Deadly Himalayan Floods Leave About 1,355 Dead and Nearly 5,000 Missing

Identification of mud-covered remains and water-filled hydroelectric tunnels are blocking recoveries and driving a massive cross-border rescue effort.

Overview

  • Intense monsoon rains and landslides that struck the central Himalaya on August 26 swept villages and hydroelectric sites, producing widespread destruction and the high casualty figures now being reported.
  • Nepal’s NDRRMA gives the latest toll at roughly 1,355–1,356 dead with about 4,994–4,996 people still missing while Tibet authorities report 43 dead and 519 missing, leaving total missing in the region at several thousand.
  • More than 21,000 military, police and rescue personnel are conducting large-scale searches focused on mud-choked settlements and at least eleven hydroelectric tunnels where many workers are believed trapped.
  • Forensic teams face major ID problems because bodies and partial remains are buried in thick mud and swept downstream, and only about 98 recovered bodies have been formally returned to families so far.
  • Thousands of people have been treated or sheltered and hundreds of foreign nationals are among the missing, which is prompting active consular coordination and will shape ongoing recovery and notification efforts.
