Deadly 24-Hour Wave of Highway Crashes Across Multiple Brazilian States

Authorities have opened inquiries across the separate collisions after rescue operations concluded.

Overview

  • In Itapecerica da Serra, a concrete mixer toppled onto a car on Rodovia Prefeito Bento Domingues, killing at least three and leaving two gravely injured, according to firefighters.
  • One victim was identified as João Márcio Pietralonga Fernandes, 41, a São Paulo labor court employee who was commuting to work, according to family members.
  • Overnight incidents included a fatal pickup–bus head-on on Rodovia Lix da Cunha in Campinas, a potato truck overturning on SE-245 in Malhador, a two-truck crash on the Dutra in Cruzeiro that killed a driver, and a motorcyclist striking a stopped pickup on Padre Manoel da Nóbrega in São Vicente.
  • In Cruzeiro, federal highway police reported a parked truck was hit from behind and its driver was fatally run over by his own vehicle, and the case was recorded as homicide culposo in traffic.
  • Separate crashes also killed motorists in Barretos, Tupi Paulista, and on highways in the Alto Paranaíba region of Minas Gerais, with forensic work and IML procedures in progress.
