Deadline Arrives for San Diego Trash Bin Selections Under New Fee System

Voter-approved Measure B triggered the new fees.

Overview

  • Fewer than half of eligible customers had chosen bin sizes a day before the cutoff, though the city says more than 90,000 property owners created portal accounts.
  • Nonresponders will receive 95-gallon bins with the highest service level at about $43.60 per month initially, with a 30-day window after delivery to swap for smaller sizes and receive credits on next year’s tax bill.
  • Deliveries of new gray trash bins begin Oct. 6 and continue through June 2026, followed by light-blue recycling bins, and the city will collect only from the new containers once they arrive.
  • The city will remove and recycle old bins, and the new containers include scannable tags intended to improve pickup tracking and service efficiency.
  • About 21,000 addresses deemed ineligible must hire private haulers, and the city reports 59% have contracted service while it maintains interim pickups and warns that noncompliance can lead to citations.
