Dead Humpback Whales Washing Up Off East Coast Raise Alarm

Two more humpback whales were found dead off the coasts of New York and New Jersey, bringing the total to 23 so far this year.
Biologists are investigating the deaths which are likely due to human causes such as ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements.
The whales were spotted floating in waters near New York City, in an area known for heavy ship traffic and commercial fishing.
While humpback whale populations have rebounded since commercial whaling was banned, the recent deaths are worrying experts who want to determine the root causes.
Although sonar surveying of the ocean floor has been suggested as a possible factor, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration does not consider it a likely cause of the deaths.
