DEA Touts 617 Arrests in Global Sinaloa Cartel Sweep as Mexico Denies Joint Role

Mexican security forces report separate raids across Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas to target meth precursors, armed cells.

  • DEA says a coordinated Aug. 25–29 operation across 23 U.S. divisions and seven foreign regions led to 617 arrests, more than 10 tons of drugs seized, over 400 firearms recovered and about $11.1 million in cash confiscated.
  • U.S. figures detail seizures including 480 kilograms of fentanyl powder, 714,707 counterfeit pills, roughly 2.2 tonnes of methamphetamine and 7.46 tonnes of cocaine, plus 420 guns and assets valued at about $1.7 million.
  • Mexico’s security chief Omar García Harfuch stated Mexico did not participate in the DEA’s international sweep, stressing that Mexican authorities conduct their own actions against the Sinaloa network.
  • In Sinaloa, Mexican forces disabled five precursor concentration sites in Culiacán and Cosalá, later destroying additional chemical stockpiles in Cosalá that included around 420 liters of benzyl alcohol used in meth production.
  • Domestic operations also netted arrests and weapons: 10 armed suspects were detained in Culiacán with rifles, handguns, vehicles and motorcycles, while separate actions reported seizures and detentions in Sonora and Tamaulipas, including eight alleged Gulf Cartel members in Tula.
