DEA Opens Thousands of Drop-Off Sites for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Today

The initiative aims to curb misuse through free, anonymous disposal at thousands of temporary and permanent sites.

Overview

  • Collections run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time with roughly 4,500 locations staffed by nearly 4,000 law-enforcement partners nationwide.
  • Sites accept tablets, capsules, patches and sealed liquids in original containers, while syringes, sharps and illicit drugs are not accepted, with some locations taking vape devices if batteries are removed.
  • Since 2010, the program has removed about 19.8–20 million pounds of medications, including more than 310 tons collected in April 2025.
  • Hospitals, police departments and retail partners are hosting no‑questions‑asked drop‑offs, with examples including HCA/TriStar events and participating Wegmans and Kroger locations.
  • Those unable to attend can use nearly 16,500 year‑round drop boxes or state options such as at‑home drug‑deactivation pouches.
