DEA Announces 670 Arrests in Five-Day Sweep Targeting CJNG

Officials framed the action as a terrorism-focused, multiagency push that extended across U.S. field divisions and seven foreign regions.

Overview

  • The DEA said the Sept. 22–26 operation ran across 23 U.S. field divisions and seven foreign regions as part of a broader U.S. strategy against transnational crime.
  • Authorities reported seizing 92.4 kg of fentanyl powder, 1,157,672 counterfeit pills, 6,062 kg of methamphetamine, 22,842 kg of cocaine, 33 kg of heroin, 244 firearms, $18.6 million in cash, and about $29.6 million in assets.
  • DEA Administrator Terrance Cole said the agency is pursuing the CJNG as a terrorist organization from leadership down through distribution networks, in coordination with the Homeland Security Task Force.
  • The agency reiterated a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the capture of alleged CJNG leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho.
  • Names of detainees and full judicial details have not been released, and Mexican officials have disputed any formal joint 'Proyecto Portero' agreement as investigations and prosecutions continue.
