DDR Prestige Train SVT Görlitz Nears Completion for September Relaunch

Volunteer efforts helped restore the 1960s train ahead of its final tests for up to 50 chartered journeys a year

Overview

  • The SVT Görlitz was built between 1963 and 1968, featuring a streamlined front and originally serving routes between Berlin, Prague and Vienna.
  • Enthusiasts and donors contributed funds and volunteer labor to restore the train at VIS Verkehrs Industrie Systeme GmbH in Halberstadt.
  • An open day in June showcased the renovated interior and drew long visitor lines to the restoration site.
  • The train will undergo test drives, training runs and a technical inspection over the summer ahead of its September 2025 relaunch.
  • Once approved, the SVT Görlitz will operate 40 to 50 passenger trips annually and be available for charter.
