D.C. Man Held Without Bond in Transgender Woman’s Killing With Hate-Crime Enhancement
Prosecutors say surveillance video identifies Edgar Arrington as the gunman.
Overview
- U.S. Marshals apprehended Arrington, 38, in Rowan County, N.C., in connection with the July 5 killing of Daquane “Dream” Johnson, 28, on Benning Road NE.
- He is charged with first-degree murder while armed with a hate-crime enhancement based on the victim’s gender identity, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
- At a Sept. 18 initial appearance, Magistrate Judge Heide Herrmann found probable cause and ordered Arrington detained pending an Oct. 7 preliminary hearing before Judge Danya Dayson.
- A 21-page arrest affidavit cites surveillance footage that captured the offense and interviews with at least five witnesses, most of whom identified Arrington, and it alleges he hurled anti-trans slurs before firing multiple shots.
- Defense attorney Rachel Cicurel said she will offer evidence of an alternate shooter and self-defense, claims prosecutors dispute; Assistant U.S. Attorney Shauna Payyappilly is leading the case.
