Daytona Beach Mother Sentenced to 32 Years After No-Contest Plea in Son’s Death

Prosecutors said the teen’s death followed prolonged neglect documented by police and the medical examiner.

Overview

  • Authorities reported the 14-year-old weighed 33 pounds and was severely malnourished and dehydrated with bed sores, fresh bruises and scars.
  • An autopsy ruled the death a homicide after officers found the boy unresponsive at the family’s Carolina Lake Drive home on Jan. 1, 2024.
  • Detectives said Talia Nelson had not taken her son to a doctor since June 2020 despite claiming he had a rare bone disease, lactose intolerance and bulimia.
  • Nelson was arrested on Feb. 9, 2024, following an investigation by the Daytona Beach Police Department and prosecution by the 7th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.
  • State Attorney R. J. Larizza denounced the case as incomprehensible and cruel, citing the long-term nature of the neglect and abuse.
