Day of Libraries Brings Statewide Events in Saxony-Anhalt as Magdeburg Campus Unveils 24/7 Access

State data show fewer libraries with uneven access despite strong usage.

Overview

  • On Friday, 24 October, libraries across Saxony-Anhalt will host readings, workshops, tours and community activities as part of the nationwide Day of Libraries.
  • The Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal will open its Magdeburg library around the clock from 24 October with ID-enabled entry and borrowing, marking the first 24/7 service in the state.
  • The Stendal city library is running a wrapped-book “Blind Date” from 20 to 24 October, while Wittenberg, Wernigerode and Oschersleben plan child- and family-focused programs.
  • Official 2024 figures report 143 public libraries statewide, ten fewer than the previous year, with access available in municipalities for about 87% of residents.
  • Regional gaps persist, with Börde hosting 26 libraries yet 21% lacking access and Mansfeld-Südharz worst served at eight libraries and 41% without access, as public libraries recorded roughly 1.78 million visits and over 5.1 million loans last year.
