Day 3 of La Serena Sea Search for Missing Argentine Teen Adds Aircraft and Robot Sub

Officials plan to continue only if conditions allow with a reasonable chance of success.

Overview

  • Alejandro Cabrera Iturriaga, 17, disappeared after a strong current pulled him from the Cuatro Esquinas area not authorized for bathing, as a passerby rescued four other youths.
  • More than 100 personnel from the Chilean Navy, municipal crews, COSAR, local fishermen and volunteer lifeguards are engaged in the effort.
  • Assets now include an aeromaritime surveillance aircraft, drones, two patrol boats acting as platforms for diving and a remotely operated underwater vehicle, jet skis, and about 25–28 small boats with 56 divers.
  • Teams have covered the coastline from Punta Teatinos to the Caleta de Peñuelas through surface sweeps, underwater checks and shoreline patrols without positive findings.
  • Authorities describe the broad beach as popular for land activities yet prone to abrupt tidal changes that increase risk and complicate search conditions.
