David Mazariegos Charged With Murder in Fatal Jay Street Subway Beating

Prosecutors say he confessed to the video-recorded assault after officers used a force-wide alert to track him down.

Overview

  • David Mazariegos, 25, was arraigned Thursday in Brooklyn on charges including murder, robbery and grand larceny, and was remanded, according to prosecutors.
  • Police identified the victim as 64-year-old Nicola Tanzi of Bensonhurst, who died shortly after being found unconscious with severe head trauma at the Jay Street–MetroTech station.
  • Investigators say station cameras captured Mazariegos punching, kicking and stomping Tanzi up to 15 times, and police say he admitted he attacked because he didn’t like how the victim looked at him at an emergency gate.
  • Officers arrested Mazariegos near Times Square hours after the attack after a department-wide alert with his photo was pushed to officers’ phones, the NYPD said.
  • At the time of arrest, officers recovered a katana-style sword and several of Tanzi’s credit cards, including one allegedly used just beforehand, and authorities note he has an extensive prior arrest history.
