David Kaff, Spinal Tap Keyboardist Viv Savage, Dies at 79

His death comes just months before the release of its new sequel, in which he will not appear.

Overview

  • His band announced on Facebook that he “passed away peacefully in his sleep” on July 11 at age 79; no cause of death has been disclosed.
  • He achieved cult status portraying keyboardist Viv Savage in Rob Reiner’s 1984 mockumentary This Is… Spinal Tap and is remembered for his line, “Have a good time… all the time.”
  • Before his film role, Kaff was a founding member of the prog-rock band Rare Bird and contributed keyboard work to Chuck Berry’s 1972 album The London Chuck Berry Sessions.
  • Kaff performed live as Viv Savage, including a 1984 Saturday Night Live appearance, and continued making music with Model Citizenz and Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom into the 2020s.
  • The film’s sequel is slated for release in September 2025, and he does not appear in it.
