David Greenwood, UCLA Standout and NBA Champion, Dies at 68

His family kept his cancer diagnosis private until his death on June 8 in Riverside, California.

Overview

  • He was a four-year starter at UCLA from 1975 to 1979, averaging 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds while helping the Bruins to four consecutive league titles.
  • Greenwood was selected No. 2 overall in the 1979 NBA draft and anchored the Chicago Bulls alongside Reggie Theus and Orlando Woolridge until his 1985 trade to the San Antonio Spurs.
  • Over a 12-season NBA career with Chicago, San Antonio, Denver and Detroit, he averaged 10.2 points and 7.9 rebounds in 823 games and earned a championship ring with the Pistons in 1990.
  • After retiring, he coached Verbum Dei High to back-to-back state titles in 1998 and 1999 and was enshrined in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
  • He is survived by his son Jemil, daughter Tiffany, brother Al, sister Laverne and former wife Joyce.
