David Barklow Extradited From Peru, Charged in 2004 Near North Chicago Killing

Modern forensic testing, coupled with international coordination, led detectives to the suspect years after the case went cold.

Overview

  • Authorities say Barklow, 68, was returned to Chicago on Friday and charged with one count of first-degree murder; a detention hearing is expected Saturday at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
  • Victim Kent Projansky, 40, was shot inside his apartment on Dec. 18, 2004 in the 1100 block of North Dearborn in the Near North neighborhood.
  • Days after the killing, police recovered a duffel bag on the Northwest Side containing bloody clothing and a handgun; ballistic tests and later lab work tied the items to the crime, and the blood matched Projansky.
  • In 2017, retired Detective James Browne resubmitted latent evidence to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab after technology upgrades, leading to Barklow’s identification; he lived across the street from Projansky in 2004.
  • U.S. Marshals arrested Barklow in October 2019 before releasing him pending forensic confirmation, after which he fled to Ecuador and was later located in Peru through cooperation among DOJ, FBI, U.S. Marshals, the State Department, INTERPOL and Peruvian authorities, with no motive disclosed by police.
