- Across 17 seasons as a manager he went 1,372–1,071 and earned Manager of the Year honors with the Orioles in 1997 and the Nationals in 2012.
- He led the 1986 Mets to a championship and remains the franchise’s leader in managerial wins (595) and winning percentage (.588).
- Before managing, he played 13 MLB seasons as a four-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove second baseman, winning titles with the Orioles in 1966 and 1970.
- He hit 43 home runs for the 1973 Braves and was regarded as an early adopter of data-driven strategies long before analytics became widespread.
