Valerie, born in South Africa, was an architect and a passionate advocate for social causes, including peace, environmental conservation, and women’s rights.
Her life was marked by personal tragedies, including the deaths of her husband John Matthews in 1977 and her daughter Anne in 1994, after which she gained custody of Anne’s children.
Dave Matthews canceled his performance at the FireAid benefit concert in late January due to her rapidly declining health.
