Mütterrente III Passes but Most Pensioners Won’t See Money Until 2028

Technical recalculation work at the Deutsche Rentenversicherung and unresolved tax and transition rules mean the law’s benefit will be paid retroactively after systems are updated.

Overview

  • The Mütterrente III law takes effect on 1 January 2027 and grants an extra six months of credited child‑rearing time (0.5 entitlement points) for each child born before 1992.
  • At current pension values that half point is worth about €21 a month gross per child and will generate retroactive payments for 2027 when the Deutsche Rentenversicherung finishes large‑scale IT recalculations in 2028.
  • The Finance Ministry has circulated a draft Frühstartrentengesetz to start on 1 January 2027 that would pay €10 a month into certified child retirement accounts from ages six to 18, totaling up to €1,440 per eligible child and applying only to specified cohorts including birth year 2020.
  • Renten were uprated by 4.24% on 1 July 2026 and federal modelling shows the increase changes tax exposure for many pensioners, with about 204,000 people becoming newly liable for income tax while roughly 166,000 are relieved.
  • Policymakers are negotiating transition protections for people close to retirement and grappling with how added entitlement points will interact with means‑tested benefits, regional and gender gaps in payouts, and the DRV’s individual case checks, so beneficiaries should check their insurance records and expect phased implementation.
